Lake of The Woods Forest Preserve
A local favorite for families, featuring paved walking and biking trails, fishing, picnic shelters, playground areas, and wide-open green space. Home to the Mabery Gelvin Botanical Garden and seasonal programs, it’s perfect for weekend exploring.
Buffalo Trace
Wide skies and deep history. The 4.2-mile Prairie Loop is an easy 1.5–2 hour walk through restored tallgrass prairie just outside Mahomet, with entrances on Mid-America Road and Crowley Road near the high school. Named after the bison “traces” that once crossed this land — routes that even shaped early roads and today’s I-74 — the prairie is actively managed with prescribed burns to preserve one of Illinois’ rarest natural landscapes.
Barber Park
Mahomet’s go-to gathering spot. Splash pad in the summer, playground packed after school, ballgames on the fields, and community events under the pavilion. If something’s happening in town, it’s probably happening here.
Riverbend Forest Preserve
Big water. Deep woods. No noise.
With 391 acres, two lakes (including the county’s largest), and miles of river and forest trails, Riverbend is where Mahomet goes to unplug. Paddle, fish, hike, or just disappear into the trees for a while.

Mahomet Canoe Launch Facility at Greenway Park
A simple, easy access point to the Sangamon River right in town. Load up the kayak or canoe, slide in, and head downstream for a quiet float through wooded riverbanks. It’s low-key, local, and perfect for summer paddling without leaving Mahomet.

13 Acres Park
Thirteen acres built for game days. With five ball fields, wide open green space, a playground, and a concession stand, this is where Mahomet families spend spring and summer evenings. Cleats in the grass, kids on the swings, and everyone hanging around just a little longer after the last inning.

10.5 acres built for busy evenings. With two ball fields, a concession stand, seasonal restrooms, and nearly a mile walking trail, it’s a full-family park. Add in basketball, sand volleyball, and horseshoe pits, and it’s easy to spend a few hours here. Open dawn to dusk.
